Urban Agriculture Program

Launched in November 2019, the Shehersaaz Urban Agriculture Program empowers communities to grow their own fresh produce and develop sustainable gardening practices. Urban farming is rapidly becoming a vital solution for addressing food security, unemployment, and poverty in cities. By transforming underutilized spaces like rooftops, vacant plots, and community gardens, urban farming increases access to locally grown, fresh produce while creating job opportunities and supporting sustainable development.

With technical assistance from experts at the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) and valuable insights from Shehersaaz Board members, the program offers practical solutions for urban households to cultivate home-grown vegetables, create compost, and manage plants using innovative techniques.

At Shehersaaz, our focus on skill-building at the household level empowers urban women residents to grow their own food, adopt eco-friendly practices, and contribute to food security. Women in the community are also given a platform to sell their produce, along with training to make chutneys and pickles, which are sold to local markets and individuals. This initiative not only promotes self-sufficiency but also supports economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.
